About Horny Goat Weed
Epimedium, known as Horny Goat Weed, is an erectile aid and aphrodisiac used in Traditional Chinese Medicine that just so happens to also increase in Testosterone in research, and may also be a cognitive booster and heart health agent.
Horny Goat Weed is a herb (Epimedium) that is known for being an aphrodisiac and touted as a Testosterone Booster. It derives its layman names from goats and sheep who acted a bit more frisky after consuming Epimedium that grew near their fields.
It is also sometimes referred to by its active ingredient, Icariin. Icariin is known as a prenylated flavonoid compound and has been shown to exert much of the aphrodisiac effects of Horny Goat Weed. It has also been shown in one study to increase Testosterone levels at a rather high dose, and moderate dosages are shown to be beneficial for bone health.
Icariin has not been shown to increase testosterone in females, yet two other compounds in Horny Goat Weed (Icaritin, Desmethylicaritin) have actually increased Esstrogen in post-menopausal females. The herb acts as an aphrodisiac in both genders, and the gender-specific hormone increasing could be beneficial for both genders.
How to Take (recommended dosage, active amounts, other details)
Testosterone boosting effects in been noted at a dosage of 200mg/kg of a 40% extract (80mg/kg Icariin), and based on body weight this results in an estimated human dose of:
BENEFITS FROM TAKING HORNY GOAT WEED?
Men/Women can benefit from taking Horny Goat Weed capsules in various ways and such benefits are the result of a moderate boost in both the levels of testosterone and the levels of nitric oxide.
The benefits man/women can expect to gain include the following
1. Increasing Testosterone (in Damaged Testes At Least). One study on rats began with researcher injecting cyclophosphamide, a chemotherapy agent that damaged their reproductive system. Icariin treatment actually improved testosterone levels. Admittedly the rats were given a lot of Icariin from a 40% extract, but the testosterone increase was over threefold.
2. Helps with Healing Gonad and Bone Mass Tissues. Some studies found Icariin did actual healing on the reproductive organs and helped restore bone mass. Many studies have verified the latter and bone loss, of course, is experienced by many men with low testosterone.
3. Helps with (Inflammation) Reduction. One study on mice showed decreased TNF alpha levels. As mentioned on other pages, TNF alpha is the "root of all evil" and may be significantly responsible for arterial plaque.
4. Helps with Cortisol Control and Antidepressant Properties. Icariin's real magic may have to do with stress. A number of animal studies have shown that Icariin blunts the typical overly high cortisol rise that results from chronic stress. Know anyone who struggles with chronic stress? In fact, it is so powerful in this regard that some experts have recommended that it be studied as a possible therapy in depression.
5. Antioxidant Protection. Many studies have shown Icariin's strong antioxidant abilities.
6. Memory Protection. Animal studies strongly indicate that Icarrin can protect against certain kinds of memory loss. That includes memory loss resulting from aluminum damage.
You'll quickly notice that Icariin seems to battle all of the standard middle-aged and senior male issues: testosterone reduction, cortisol and TNF alpha increases, loss of nitric oxide/bone mass. In addition, it may provide protection against such brain-related orders as memory loss, and helps with depression.
All of these reasons point to Icariin as a legitimate male anti-aging super-supplement that has strong anecdotal evidence to support it as well. Furthermore, it seems to be much better tolerated than other supplements, making it a viable contender for erectile dysfunction reliefs.

More on Horny Goat Weed
- Horny Goat Weed/Epimedium It's hard to imagine an herb with a name like horny goat weed would not be a sexual enhancer. As the story goes, the name came from observations by Chinese goat herders that their animals became exceptionally amorous after grazing on a particular shrub now known to be Epimedium Sagittium.
- Perhaps due mostly to its common name, Epimedium shows up in many "herbal" sexual enhancers. Like ginseng, Epimedium has been used as a male sexual tonic in Traditional Chinese Medicine for several thousand years and its effectiveness and mechanism of action has been the subject of recent scientific study.
- Epimedium appears to impact male sexual performance mainly through the actions of a particular flavonoid known as icariin.
- Epimedium herb can be found standardized to between 10% and 20% icariin, so the minimal effective dose of the dried herb would likely be 1.5g to 3g. Most available men's formulas contain less than 500mg of Epimedium herb and less than 50mg of icariin.
- Unlike ginseng, it would appear that the icariin in Epimedium is effective shortly after ingestion and could be used in a manner similar to pharmaceutical erectogenic drugs.
